Upper Hominy is the beacon of making the most of what you have. This is a small department running <800 calls a year. While the tax base is small in comparison, the department has absolutely kept up with the times. This is thanks to outstanding, progressive and passionate leadership. The chief is young but knowledgable with a drive to give his guys the best equipment, pay, resources, and support possible. The department also offers a jam up deputy chief who is just as supportive. The department works a 48/96 which is incredible. Our first due engine is one of the best trucks I have driven & perfect for the community which it serves. All that being said I only have one complaint – complacency. Unfortunately our very supportive and understanding leadership has some appointed officers; officers who stem from years (some tens of years) of service within the fire service. These individuals have the most negative outlooks possible with no desire to better themselves. In their mind they have peaked. They award themselves no physical standards and training can be summed up into a simple arm chair quarter back session. If you are reading this & think that I am talking about you.. fix it. This department offers you a luxury work environment. Your constant complaints and whining stems from a lack of stimulation. We have a incredible gym, a large bay with training props, all collecting dust. The amount of complaining (substitute curse word) our chief is uncalled for. Maybe you forget what working for a truly bad chief is like. Maybe you are intimidated by the fact that you could be his father & he has already achieved more then you ever will. All that being said, a few bad apples can ruin the batch, but the true firefighters at this department have stood their ground. The real issue with morale is limited to 3 out of the 12 full time employees.
