The Troy Fire Department numbers 124 uniformed personnel and operates 5 engine companies, a rescue engine company, 2 truck companies, three ambulances, a hazardous material response unit, collapse rescue unit, and 3 rescue boats. Approximately 14,000 calls are answered each year, about 1000 for fire, about 450 of which occur in structures. The Troy Fire Department is also the hazardous material response unit for the County of Rensselaer
We have had a lot of turnover the last few years, so the passionate men and women of the fire service are fast being replaced with non passionate, first job, uncaring for tradition members. Our pay is lowest in the area meanwhile we perform the most services in a single city( fire, ems and transport, water ops, hazmat, collapse/trench rescue, confined space, and tactical medic with local PD). Our command staff cares about the department but gets zero help from city administration. The rigs are a hodgepodge of new and old with the newest engine due to be delivered this year and the collapse rig being a late 80’s unit. Moral may not be at an all time low, but it’s close.
