PLFD is a 2 station combination department. They run about 800 calls per year. They are a licensed FRO but do not run medical calls of any kind. Gas leaks and power line calls are their bread and butter runs. When helicopters come and go from the local ER they take 2 engines over there and sit there “just in case” the helicopter crashes.
This is a retirement home. If you’re at the end of your career and want and easy place to finish it off or if you want to work here for 5 years and get another retirement under your belt.
Culture? – This is not a department with high standards or expectations. There is not written test or physical. The hiring process is an interview and a drug test. Sometimes not even an interview if the chief knows you. You will not be challenged or encouraged to better yourself.
Training? – it is non existent, the training field is literally falling apart. No forcible entry door, no roof prop, no entanglement prop, etc.
You will spend a lot of time doing busy work. Here are some examples:
Going to city hall and putting furniture together, moving furniture, installing a dishwasher, fixing ceiling tiles etc.
Helping public works mow the city when they’re short staffed.
Going to the local gym with a brush truck a spraying water down their grease trap to unclog it.
There are better options out there, there are some pros to this place but they do not outweigh the cons. Do your research, know where you’re going.
