The Beckwourth Ranger District of the Plumas National Forest is one of three ranger districts for the Forest. It is bordered by the Tahoe National Forest to the south and Lassen National Forest to the north. The Beckwourth Ranger District hosts the Beckwourth Hotshots, 5 type 3 engines, 2 patrols and 1 dozer. The district’s close proximity to Reno, Nevada makes it a popular vacation destination with plenty of recreational activities like boating or swimming in Lake Davis and Frenchman Lake. The District also hosts many campsites and OHV trails.
Compared to many places in the Forest Service this isn’t a bad place to be at. Overhead cares and puts in the effort to make this a better place to work. Hotshot crew is solid and most of the engines aren’t too bad either. A good amount of barracks housing is available that are nearby the work centers. They work a 4/10 schedule which is much better than a 5/8 schedule in my opinion. All the equipment sucks and breaks all the time, but that’s anywhere in the Forest Service. Admin staff are eh, but again it’s the Forest Service so you expect that. Overall I’m glad I started my career here and would recommend working here.
