Department Description:
The North Summit Fire District serves the Cities of Coalville & Henefer and the areas of Echo, Upton, Hoytsville, Wanship, Rockport & Echo State Parks and everywhere in between. Our response area goes from mile marker 150 on I-80 to the Wyoming border, from the Morgan County line to just outside of Peoa.
The response areas includes two major freeways, railroads, Rockport & Echo reservoirs, the Weber River and many private and public recreation areas. The department and its members are committed to professional service and we take what we do very seriously. Our funding comes from a Special Service District established in 1954.
Chief Ben Nielson has been at the helm since 2022. Since his hiring, Chief Nielson has helped North Summit transition to a volunteer fire department to a full-time combination department.
At the beginning of 2024, NSFD took over EMS response from Summit County EMS, and added 2 ambulances to their fleet. Because of these additional roles and responsibilities, Norths Summit has increased it’s staffing to over 40 personnel.
In 2025, North Summit Fire District increased their level of service by becoming the primary response to all water rescue emergencies in the county. This included the purchase of new technical rope and water rescue equipment.
In May 2025, 6 members of the department received technician level certification in swiftwater and surface water rescue. These individuals then went on to obtain their certifications as Rope Rescue Technicians that next month.
Summer of 2025, the North Summit Fire District formed a Type II/III Rapid Extrication Module Support (REMS) team. This team will deploy to wildfire incidents nationwide to provide technical rescue standby and support, as well as emergency medical care for wildland firefighters.
