I normally work a 48-on/48-off schedule, but since we’re chronically short-staffed, that’s turned into a lovely 72-on/24-off rotation—courtesy of mandatory overtime. With no real leadership and morale circling the drain across all three districts in the Hampton Roads region, it’s honestly a miracle anyone shows up at all. The chiefs are blissfully unaware—or uninterested—in what their guys are dealing with, and our “training officers” are more punchline than resource. At this point, the region will hire any warm, incompetent body that stumbles in off the street. In short: I worked the overtime because someone had to, and apparently the bar for staffing has never been lower.
