About Us
The Murfreesboro Fire Department is a highly respected agency established in 1902. Our Department has consistently enhanced the fire, rescue, and medical services we provide to meet the needs of our rapidly growing population of more than 150,000 residents. A total of 239 uniformed personnel work out of our 11 strategically placed Firehouses. Last year, the men and women of Murfreesboro Fire answered the call for help over 23,000 times.
Mission
The mission of the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department is to deliver the highest level of emergency response with the greatest margin of safety in the most fiscally responsible way. Personnel are dedicated to providing progressive fire protection, technical rescue, basic life support medical services, codes enforcement and inspection, and public fire safety education. The Department also provides the community with a coordinated and planned response to natural and man-made disasters.
History
In April of 1869, a devastating fire swept through the west side of the town square, prompting the community to establish a volunteer fire company. The first Firehouse, which housed a horse-drawn steam engine, was built in the late 1800’s at the northwest corner of the Vine and Church Street intersection.
By 1902, the City took a significant step forward by passing an ordinance to create a professional, paid Fire Department. At that time, the Department consisted of a Fire Chief, an engineer, a mechanic, a nozzleman, and three linemen.
