Overview
The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department (KDHFD) serves the Town of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the largest municipality in Dare County by year-round population. Located on the Outer Banks, the department provides a full range of emergency services to residents, businesses, and the millions of visitors who travel to the area each year.
KDHFD is responsible for fire suppression, emergency medical first response, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, public education, and emergency management support. Due to the town’s unique coastal environment, the department responds to a wide variety of incidents, including residential and commercial structure fires, motor vehicle collisions, severe weather events, ocean and sound-side emergencies, and incidents involving the area’s hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and retail businesses.
The department protects a community with significant seasonal population fluctuations. During the peak tourism season, the population can increase several times above its permanent resident base, creating additional demands on emergency services. This requires personnel to maintain readiness for high call volumes, complex incidents, and large-scale emergency operations.
KDHFD operates from a strategically located fire station to provide efficient response throughout the town and works closely with neighboring fire departments, Dare County Emergency Medical Services, Dare County Emergency Management, law enforcement agencies, the North Carolina Forest Service, and state and federal partners through mutual aid agreements and regional emergency response plans.
The department emphasizes professional training, firefighter safety, and community risk reduction. Personnel participate in ongoing education in accordance with North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal certification standards and National Incident Management System (NIMS) principles. Training includes structural firefighting, incident command, technical rescue, hazardous materials awareness and operations, emergency medical response, and disaster preparedness.
Beyond emergency response, the department actively engages the community through fire safety education, smoke alarm programs, inspections, code enforcement, and public outreach initiatives designed to reduce fire risk and improve community resilience.
As part of the Town of Kill Devil Hills’ commitment to public safety, the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department strives to deliver professional, efficient, and compassionate emergency services while protecting lives, property, and the coastal environment. Its combination of highly trained personnel, modern equipment, regional partnerships, and focus on preparedness enables the department to meet the unique challenges of serving one of North Carolina’s busiest coastal communities
