The High Point Fire Department was officially organized in 1890 as a volunteer membership, which was the beginning of a long tradition of service for High Point. The first paid firefighters for High Point operated from a residence. Mrs. Fuller’s residence on Trade Street was where the fire horse was kept and cared for.
In 1915 the first motorized apparatus was purchased, a Studebaker hose wagon. This spurred great growth within HPFD, which rapidly continued to expand and grow. The Department is now 14 fire stations in size, 14 Engines, 4 Truck companies, 1 being a Tiller. Employing 234 personnel, with more than 40 pieces of apparatus. Service to the city is the driving force of HPFD and the motto denotes this by saying, “Safety, Commitment, Excellence since 1890”.
This Department has the chance to be the talk of NC, unfortunately administration is so out of touch with reality.
You will be dog tired at the end of your shift and realize it’s from chores and errands, or the endless non stop training drills you do, and if you’re not doing that, it’s pre plans, or some other task book they have notched onto personnel. You won’t be tired from responding to the public.
You can be fat and overweight weight, but if your shirt is tucked in and your hat isn’t backwards then you can fight fire.
There is workout equipment in every station, but goodluck finding the time or energy to squeeze it in.
The downtown Tiller guys got wrote up for taking a late lunch nap (after their lunch hour got ruined from a traffic accident call) They run calls most of the night.
Admin loves to tell you what you want to hear and do nothing they told you, they were gonna do.
Relief driver is a death sentence to your career. They will travel you to drive constantly but only give temporary promotional pay to their favorites.
Unfortunately this departments culture believes cleaning and polishing already cleaned things makes you a good firefighter. They have a Batallion Chief over “station beautification”. I wish I was joking.
This department will be awesome when the boomers and close minded people in leadership positions push out and HP comes back to the 21st century.
