What it is
Halifax Regional Police is the municipal police force responsible for policing the more urban core parts of Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). They merged in 1996 from the old Halifax, Dartmouth, and Bedford police forces when the towns amalgamated into HRM.
Where they operate
HRP covers:
• Peninsular Halifax
• Dartmouth
• Bedford
• Communities from Bedford extending toward the Sambro Loop (and surrounding loops like Purcells Cove – Herring Cove Loop)
The more suburban/rural areas outside this core are handled by the RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment.
Structure & Units
HRP’s structure includes:
• Divisional Patrols: Central, East, and West Divisions. These cover different geographic sectors of the city.
• Support units: K-9, mounted (horses), traffic, emergency response, mental health mobile crisis team, ports unit, etc.
• Integrated Units with RCMP: For example, the Criminal Investigation Division is fully integrated — meaning HRP and RCMP officers work together in many serious investigations.
• Governance: HRP is overseen by a civilian Board of Police Commissioners which helps set strategy, policy, budget in consultation with public values.
Mission, Vision, Values
• Mission: Working together to keep our communities safe.
• Vision: To build and maintain confidence, trust, and safety in partnership with our communities.
• Values include respect, integrity, relationships, communication, and people being the primary concern.
