Forest Hill Fire Department started as a volunteer organization in 1954 and has since moved to a professional organization. The department runs Engine 23 out of a single station, running just under 3,000 calls a year, Operating under a 48/96 schedule. It has mutual aid agreements with Fort Worth, Everman, Kennedale, Rendon, Dalworthington gardens, and Edgecliff Village.
The station operates with 15 personnel in station, 3 lieutenants, 3 engineers, and 9 firemen. With Chief and a battalion chief working in administration roles.
48/96 is the big plus. Morale between the guys in house is great, that’s the only reason most of us have stayed. We don’t have the newest equipment but we make do, when something needs to be fixed it usually takes a good while. Our station is roughly 80 years old, our trucks have gone months without necessary repairs. Leadership is where we really fail. Not only at the top of our department but our city as well. Our chief is pro city not pro Fire Department. This has led to a majority of the issues we face. From the city our union has been called illegitimate and have been denied meetings of any sort.
