Fire department based in the south suburbs outside of Chicago. Two firehouses with minimum staffing of six. Running approximately 4300 calls a year including but not limited to, fire, ems, MVAs, citizen assists, etc. 16 firefighter/medics and 2 firefighter/EMTS, part of local 2720
While staffing is low, and admin makes some questionable choices not matching the direction line personnel would like to see. They typically do not interfere in calls or day to day ops. Youre not micromanaged for busy work like some depts. The actual line personnel are some of the hardest working and close knit members in the fire service. The training is some of the best in the state. The priorities of the company officers and senior members remain on those things that are really important and make the fire house a fire house and keeps firefighting great. What the dept lacks in admin inclusion and staffing levels they make up in brotherhood and loyalty to each other, strong blue collar firefighting and responding to actual fires.
Line officers are great 5/5 stars for them. Higher ups and city officials leave something to be desired with. Luckily no micromanaging or busy work.
Low staffing is a big negative.
Firemen get to be firemen and the brotherhood amongst the line personnel is very strong. Great training. Actually go to fires. Fire house feels like a firehouse.
This department has a ton of potential but is being held back and wasted by incompetent, unwilling, and egotistical, spineless, delusional administration and management.
Admin willfully ignores officers constructive criticism and solutions. Instead, they would rather continue the repeated loop of failed ideas and policies that have zero logic to them, puting employees and residents at risk.
(Ex: 6 paramedics and 1 EMT responding to a BLS psych eval vs 1 Medic and 1 EMT for chest pain call)
The Deputy is a former union president and now is a union breaker.
If the department hired a secretary, the chief wouldn’t know what to do day to day.
This organization has lost many hardworking, talented firefighter/paramedics to other departments due to a lot of these reasons.
Equipment isn’t bad. Guys have a vested interest in spec’ing out hose, tools, apparatus and vet it.
A previous administration called our low staffing “Criminal”.
The Local has been absolute rock stars when representing the firefighters. They’ve been nonstop in trying to stop the ridiculous, dumb, unilateral decisions coming from admin and management. They have been fighting relentlessly to find ways to help recruitment/rentention and keep standards to not only protect the residents, but the other firefighters. This has created a very healthy culture among the duty crews.

Tried leaving zero stars for admin, but not an option.
