In conjunction with the City’s strategic direction, Clearwater Fire & Rescue’s objective is to advocate and sustain a leading emergency service organization with a focus on quality, cost effectiveness, and all-hazard mitigation that exceeds our customer’s expectation. Clearwater Fire & Rescue was established as a fire department in 1897, legally established through Florida State Statute no. 144, Chapter 4658 and Clearwater City Charter. Clearwater Fire & Rescue consists of eight stations and more than 200 staff positions. As a municipal corporation, the City was chartered by the City Council as The City of Clearwater, Florida on May 31, 1916 under Ordinance No. 172.
A once great Tampa Bay Area department that has been on a 20 year death spiral. The Department used to be considered the premier place to work in the region but has been torn apart by two City Managers who empowered incompetent chiefs (one is serving a life sentence for raping his daughter). Now the Department is completely devoid of leadership and has no long term direction. Years of low pay led to the ratification of a respectable contract this year but it won’t be long before they are back on the bottom. The pension is one of the worst in the area and health insurance is costly.
On the positive, they have some top talent on the line and a core working hard to preserve a solid Fire culture. They are the only Department in the county with 4 man truck staffing and a BLS Heavy Rescue Squad. With a new chief coming in soon, this Department will either rise back to the top or continue its slow roll into FD purgatory.
