The Salisbury Fire Department (SFD) in Salisbury, Maryland is a combination career–volunteer department founded in 1879. It operates three stations, covering about 48 square miles with fire suppression, EMS, rescue, hazmat, and marine response services. The department has over 100 career personnel plus volunteers, and also provides fire prevention, inspections, and life safety education. Its mission is to protect lives and property while serving the community with professionalism, courage, and compassion.
The City of Salisbury Fire Department is a paid glorified volunteer department. The department struggles when it actually goes to a fire, hires and promotes incompetent individuals, and encourages mediocrity. It panders to crybaby paramedics, although 80% of the calls are barely even BLS level. They love not sending the closest available resources to emergencies, often delaying care and response. It allows dispatchers to completely fail to do their jobs, which has directly led to deaths in recent weeks. The surrounding county volunteer departments handle about 15% of total call volume including the city, but they dictate how the city gets dispatched, responds, operates etc. Very often there are fires or EMS calls where closer staffed units sit undispatched. The department has a newer Fire Chief, and turned away outside applicants due to them “not meeting the department’s minimum requirements”, meanwhile they promoted someone who didn’t meet the minimum requirements. This Chief has his own agenda, and spends alot of time away from the department at conferences that do not benefit the department. The Chief and admin do not have the departments and civilians best interests in mind. The department lies about their stats to make themselves look busier than they actually are. Lets not forget the poverty level pay, forcing the majority of its staff to work at least a 2nd fulltime job the pay bills. Overall this department is less than ideal to work for, or have respond to your emergency.
