The Gardner Fire Department serves the city of Gardner, Massachusetts—covering 23 square miles with a population of about 20,000. Staffed by roughly 40 full-time firefighters, the department provides both fire protection and ambulance/rescue services to the community.
The Gardner Fire Department is a strong, capable, and dedicated group of firefighters who take pride in their work. Despite being a busy department with solid experience and steady call volume, morale has suffered under questionable leadership. Many members have left due to poor decisions by the Chief and Captain(Second in Command). While pay remains low, the union has made significant progress in improving conditions. Overall, it’s a great department held back by leadership issues.
