Beltrami County Corrections is an adult corrections facility located in Bemidji Minnesota. They can house roughly 1,000 inmates. They’re licensed for minimum, medium and maximum classification inmates. They employ about 20 Corrections Officers, with a small administration consisting of one LT and Caption.
I served many years here, however, the average turnaround was less than 2 years. I’d see so many officers come through just to move on to another job. Administration kept saying it was a moral problem. Insisted that the FTO (field training officers) where scaring away the newbies. However, it was the lack of pay or continued training that would push officers away.
When I started the department was averaging 4-6 hands on incidents a week. So if you like to scrap, this might be the place for you.
While I worked here, admin repeatedly lowered the level of entry to try and fill positions. It lead to the hiring of unqualified people who would then be graduated from FTO early in order to make our numbers.
I repeated overheard FTOs talking about how some newbie wasn’t ready and yet here they come the next week in full uniform excepted to fill a post they don’t know how to run.
I personally reached out to admin about getting continued training and was shot down. I also asked about setting up a fitness requirement for officers and was laughed at. “Half of our officers could never pass something like that.” That’s kind of the point!
Now my time there was not all bad. I quite enjoyed the team and the sheriff supports his deputies well. The pay went up after I left so hopefully they’re making better money now.
