Bad morale with leadership that keeps employees in constant darkness. Trucks suffer from constant mechanical issues that get overlooked or bandaged up. Great group of firefighters that have their hands tied behind their backs.
Apparently, working on Squad 1 with Asheville Fire Department doesn’t come with a sense of humor. I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with one of their firefighters — a short guy with a serious attitude problem — who took extreme offense to a few harmless memes I made poking fun at him. Yes, they involved him being gay. Yes, they were jokes. And no, they weren’t malicious — unless you count having a sense of humor as a crime now.
Instead of brushing it off or, I don’t know, being an adult about it, he took it way too personally and held onto it like it was a life-threatening emergency. Fast forward to us being at the same gay club (not together, just there at the same time), and his grudge came full circle — next thing I know, I’m being kicked out of the club because he couldn’t let it go.
I wasn’t causing trouble. I wasn’t starting anything. But somehow his ego and pettiness were more important than acting like the public servant he’s supposed to be. If this is how Asheville Fire lets its members act in the community, on or off the clock, that’s a serious problem.
I came to Asheville with an outside perspective. Expecting a professional, progressive and aggressive department. Unfortunately I feel like I have been scammed. Our moral is at an “all time low” (according to the vets). We have equipment that is not maintained, and an administrative that keeps their work a secret. Our call quality is absolute crap with the day being filled with unknown problems and fire alarms. Our fires are absolute crap shows, in the five years I’ve been online I’ve heard 3 maydays. Our pay is falling behind county departments (which for some reason we hate? Maybe because they have better pay, better equipment, and administration that cares about them?) our turn over is absolutely insane. I hope that it gets better but it only seems to be getting worse.

Awful morale. Awful administration. No fire all medical.
