The Apex Fire Department (AFD) is a full-time, internationally accredited all‑hazards emergency services agency serving the Town of Apex in Wake County. Its mission is clear: protect life, property, and the environment through proactive risk reduction, readiness, and excellence
Structure & Personnel
Personnel: 114 career staff working across 6 fire stations, divided into 3 platoons (24/7 rotations). When Station 6 opened, each platoon gained a second Battalion Chief
Administration: Includes the Fire Chief, three Assistant Chiefs, administrative and training coordinators, and a Risk Reduction Division (Fire Marshal, inspectors, community risk coordinator)
Leadership is the centric problem, outdated legacy mentality that is closed minded and very “because I said so”. Efforts are being made that seem to drive in the right direction. Training is progressing, being highly prioritized and funded well.
At the company level moral and crew continuity is high, but this is easily supressed by the 1 position and even more by the #2. Life of living under a microscope is damaging and effecting most. What is perceived as dishonesty from the top, or at a minimum miscommunication that appears as dishonesty has been more regular
Though purchases are being made to improve equipment, equipment is falling apart and unreliable. The logistics administration is consistently failing to stay on top of maintenance and when maintenance is done, its subpar
Staffing is much better than those around us, and the reduction of mandatory overtime is helping work life balance. Though hiring and placement of appropriate personnel has been an Achilles heel.
