AFD is a full-service career department serving within the Abilene city limits. It responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue situations. It also provides mutual aid to Dyess Air Force Base and surrounding counties

The department handles over 15,000 emergency calls annually and provides paramedic-level EMS care
