Absolute trash as a whole. EMS based district. Massive ego medics who think they know more than they do. Many people scabbing at surrounding districts making it very cliquey. They treat new guys like complete ****. I was so stoked to work for my hometown department years ago and never have been so disappointed in a work experience. I was in paramedic school and quickly found out that rather than develop passionate people, they contract through a private Kurtz and cut people like a temp agency. I’ve even heard of people being fired, rehired, and fired again. Never saw so much gossip and **** talking/backstabbing. People disconnecting cross lays to make engineers look bad etc. I lasted about a couple months, and without any disciplinary action I was told I “didn’t grasp the job” and that I should look for another career. I was devastated. Thankfully i didnt listen. I since have been working for an actual career dept for 8 years now, made multiple grabs and put out tons of fire, and am a well respected member amongst some truly badass firemen in one of the most well paid dept in the state. There are absolutely a few good guys at NL and surrounding districts but just be ready for the wannabe salty cliquey types that barely go to fires. Also this place mandates overtime. Doesn’t pay for medic school and you have to find your own coverage. Weak 4 digit union combo dept where everyone is deathly afraid of rank. Even the people who say they like it there i have witnessed bad mouthed brutally many times
