The Wausau Fire Department has 75 members ready to respond to emergencies. All fire department members are cross-trained as Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) with the majority possessing Paramedic certification, and some possessing Critical Care Paramedic.
Due to three strategically located fire stations located throughout the City of Wausau, response time to in-City calls average 4 minutes.
The department operates 24 vehicles including the regional hazardous materials response vehicles.
The City of Wausau maintains a Class 2 fire insurance rating – which results in lower fire insurance premiums for those owning properties in the City.
Typical small town department trying to do big city stuff and failing. The only thing quicker than their turnover is the rumor mill amongst the department. The health insurance will strip hundreds from each paycheck and not cover a dime of actual medical expenses, the union is just a popularity contest, leadership is toxic and hostile unless you’re one of their favorites. People will smile to your face then stab you in the back the moment they can. Stuck in their ways, resistant to change, and quick to beat you into submission and if they can’t, make sure you know you aren’t welcome. If they’d put as much focus into managing the department as they do spreading rumors about employees then maybe they would’ve caught their EMS chief stealing narcotics from the department about 300 viles sooner…run away and apply literally anywhere else besides WFD.
