The Manchester, Connecticut Police Department is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency established in 1896. It serves the community through three primary divisions: Field Services, Support Services, and Administrative Services. The department is committed to public safety, community engagement, and professional standards. It includes specialized units such as K-9, School Resource Officers, Domestic Violence Outreach, and participation in regional tactical teams. The MPD emphasizes transparency and accessibility, offering online reporting tools, accepting citizen commendations and complaints, and maintaining a strong presence through patrol and investigative operations. Its mission focuses on protecting life and property while fostering trust within the community.
The administration is out of touch with the problems facing patrol. They bury their heads in the sand and hope the problems will resolve on their own. Admin habitually “work” half days when they do show up. The Chief holds grudges against employees and if you’re on his list good luck. There is a difference between a “leader” and a “boss” and at MPD there is no shortage of bosses…
The work environment feels toxic. No one cares about their colleagues and only looking out for themselves. Officers are habitually calling out sick and forcing their coworkers to get forced to work a double shift. Several officer are taking advantage of the agency’s sick time policy, light duty assignments and workers comp. Officers “milk” injuries for as long as they can so they don’t have to return to work. Admin allows this to happen and doesn’t question any possible fraud.
Officers are turning against each other because there is no accountability from admin. Officers call out sick just to screw and get back at one another.
Morale at MPD is terrible to say the least. Officers are over worked and constantly forced to work overtime as the overtime goes unfilled. It’s hard to plan a life outside of work as you are constantly forced to work beyond your scheduled shift.
We have been short staffed for quite a while and it is difficult to find and hire good qualified candidates. Many of the new hires lack the quality needed for this job. Standards have definitely been lowered to get greater pool of candidates. Our agency used to require college credits or military service but now we only require high school diploma or GED. To fail a recruit out of the FTO program seems like an act of GOD. No one fails FTO anymore.
The actual work schedule is good. We have a 5-2, 5-3 rotation. There is a lot of overtime opportunities if you want to work and make money. The pension for new hires is lacking. It’s a base pay pension and no overtime is counted towards it.
MPD does have a lot of resources and equipment. We have drones for patrol, a SWAT team, motorcycles, armored vehicle, ATV, UTV, homeless outreach, clinician on staff, and plenty of real life scenario based training. Our training unit is very good with all the training they put on.
