The Auburn Fire Department in Auburn, Indiana, operates around the clock with both full-time and part-time firefighters dedicated to protecting the community. The department runs out of two stations—Station 1 on County Road 35 and Station 2 on South Grandstaff Drive—strategically located to ensure quick response times. Its responsibilities extend beyond firefighting to include medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, natural disasters, and fire inspections for local buildings and businesses. The department also emphasizes education and training, providing courses for its own team as well as neighboring fire departments, and hosting public programs like the Cadet Program for young adults, fire safety education, and community outreach events. Auburn’s firefighters use the KnoxBox system to allow rapid access to commercial buildings during emergencies, and the department continues to modernize its fleet and facilities. Recently, it added a new 2024 Sutphen engine and ladder truck—featuring a 1,000-gallon water capacity and a 2,000-gallon-per-minute pump—and began expanding its training facility with new infrastructure improvements. Through its combination of emergency response, education, and modernization, the Auburn Fire Department plays a vital role in safeguarding and serving the Auburn community.
Having worked for the Auburn Fire Department for the past several years, I can honestly say it’s a place I’m proud to call my second home. I love coming to work every day — not just because of the job itself, but because of the people I work alongside. We have a very young, motivated department, and many of us are in similar stages of life, with families around the same age and shared interests. That common ground has created an incredible sense of camaraderie that feels more like a family than just a workplace.
The department has made great strides in recent years, especially with the addition of our new fleet of trucks and the ongoing improvements to our training facilities. It’s exciting to see the city invest in our future and in the tools that help us serve the community more effectively.
If there’s one challenge within the department, it would be related to an individual who oversees our training programs. This person has unfortunately caused some tension among crews and doesn’t hold the same level of respect as other leaders within the department. Still, despite that issue, the overall culture of teamwork, dedication, and brotherhood at AFD far outweighs any negatives.
Overall, Auburn Fire Department is an outstanding place to work — full of energy, passion, and people who truly care about the job and each other.
