Bay County Fire Rescue is responsible for five key areas: Fire Suppression and Prevention, Emergency Medical Services, Surf Rescue, 911 Communications, and Emergency Management. Each of these areas plays a critical role in keeping our community safe and prepared for any emergency. This department services the unincorporated areas of Bay County Florida, and provides EMS coverage for the whole of Bay County with 911 response.
The department is a great place to come and work with the line personnel, especially if you want experience with a busy busy department that runs a lot of high acuity medical calls and good fires in some of our districts. The guys at the stations are awesome and love the job and are folks you would want coming to your family. Our fleet is old, but the county commission is actively working on getting us new rigs, so relief is coming there. That being said, the command staff situation at the department has created an environment that is unsustainable, and is causing our personnel to look for employment elsewhere. The Chief instills an atmosphere of fear in to his subordinates, and rules with an iron fist with unrealistic expectations of his officers and subordinates. Until something changes at the command level, it will not be the department that it has the potential to be. This also affects our manning levels, due to new hires coming in and leaving after seeing what it is like, and not allowing us to grow, and keeps our EMS folks running a very high number of calls during their shift.
I worked here for years. This was once a great place to be until two years ago. We hired a new chief. The new chief has ran long time employees off and brought morale to an all time low. We were a growing department and now turn over is so great, we are constantly shutting down stations and ambulances due to low staffing. Even with sign on bonuses and pro match with pay based on experience. The money is good but will quickly become not enough to make the headache and stress worth it. I’ve seen great employees come and go. It is sad to build and sacrifice to assist with our goths to see it be all for not with new leadership. At this point I don’t believe there is anyone in our area that hasn’t heard of what is taking place at this once great department. We have learned that money and titles are no replacement for happiness and time with our families!
This was once a good department to work for. Once they hired from outside the organization, things went downhill and fast! The guy they hired was even a firefighter! He has an EMS background and nothing else. Morale is nonexistent, people are leaving faster than they can hire and his command staff has been a disappointment. Pay is average for the area however, there is no job satisfaction. He (and his staff) do nothing but enjoy writing people up for invented infractions. Equipment is satisfactory but manning sucks. Two schmucks to a truck mainly. Stay far away from this department. The chief, DC,ACs, Training/Communications chief are all worthless and in over their heads.
