The Kannapolis Fire Department is a full-time, career department that protects a growing city of nearly 60,000 residents spread across about 34 square miles in both Cabarrus and Rowan counties. The department staffs around 120 personnel and operates from five fire stations, strategically located to cover the entire city.
Headquarters, Station 1, is located on Firehouse Drive and houses key units including Engine 11, Ladder 14, and Rescue 10 and Safety 1. The Special Operations team is based out of Station 1. Station 2 on Richard Avenue is home to Engine 21, Tanker 28 and Battalion 1 while Station 3 on Concord Lake Road houses Engine 31 and Ladder 34. Station 4 on Stewart Street is the base for Engine 41 and the city’s Hazardous Materials unit, and Station 5 on Barr Road runs Engine 51, a brush truck, and a reserve ladder. The city also maintains a logistics warehouse for reserve apparatus and support
In addition to structural firefighting, Kannapolis Fire handles hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and wildland/brush fires. They also work closely with neighboring departments like Concord through automatic aid agreements, ensuring seamless coverage for major incidents.
Five years ago this review would’ve been 4-5 stars easily. Now they are lucky it’s 2. CITY administration especially HR is on a war path against the fire department for reason unknown. There is zero support as there are various trucks well beyond useful age with no replacement plans. In addition, the city continues to grow explosively with not plan to grow the fire department. No new stations or personnel. No training facility in the city. The list goes on. City administration looks down on the fire department as nothing hit a money pit for the city. Unfortunately Fire admin hasn’t done much to protect and push back for the members and many are in it for their own ego.
The members on the trucks though are fantastic. Aggressive go getters. Searching every space , venting roofs, VES, aggressive engines that are fast and effective. Nothing but good to say about the men and women. Many are fed up and looking elsewhere.
