Firefighters make less than $19 a hour and are forced to work 72 hours a week. This causes the department to perpetually be understaffed as the best firefighters leave for better pay and schedules.
Upper leadership has changed several times over the past 10 years. Leadership lacks of understanding of the needs of the rank and file. Ramped micromanagement leads to simple operations being impacted. Leadership picks and chooses which policies and directives to follow and when.
Federal government red tape often makes even simple projects impossible.
First line supervisors are promoted based on a single interview often preformed by non fire department members. This results in some first line supervisors being unfit for the position.
The department will pay for many national certifications but not state or other training.
Great bunch of firefighters, good camaraderie amongst the firefighters. Many great firefighters leave for better pay and hours.
Good place to start, but not somewhere to spend 25 years.
