Klamath County Fire District 1 (KCFD1) is an all hazard special district located in south-central Oregon, which provides structural and wildland fire protection, emergency advanced life support, ambulance transport, inter-facility ambulance transport, hazardous materials response and emergency rescue.
KCFD1 employs 63 operational personnel, 48 which are career firefighters 15 of which are dedicated to providing emergency rescue response. They are assigned to three shifts working the 48/96 schedule, and respond from four stations that are staffed 24/7. The remaining personnel are comprised of a Fire Chief, two Deputy Chiefs, Division Chief Fire Marshal, Division Chief of Training and seven civilian support staff.
Klamath County Fire District 1 has all the potential to be an incredible place to work. The majority of the line staff are motivated, dedicated, and genuinely want to see the district thrive. There’s a strong sense of pride at the task level, and with the right leadership and direction, this energy could carry the district into a very bright future.
That said, like any organization, there are challenges. Some long-tenured personnel have become complacent, spending more time in the recliner than on the rig, and often resisting change. Their negativity can be a drag on momentum, but new blood is steadily bringing fresh energy and perspective. As retirements approach, this generational shift will only continue, opening the door for motivated members to shape the culture moving forward.
Morale is currently low, a lingering effect of decisions made by the previous administration. But there’s also a sense of cautious optimism. Many on the line believe that progress is possible and in fact, it’s already happening. With upcoming retirements, evolving leadership, and a growing group of engaged firefighters who want to make the district better, the future of KCFD1 looks promising.
The foundation is there. The people are here. With the right vision, KCFD1 can truly become an outstanding place to build a career and serve the community.
