Joe Reyes serves as the Fire Chief of the Port Lavaca Fire Department in Texas. With 36 years of service in the department, he has held the position of Chief for the past nine years. The Port Lavaca Fire Department is the only department in which he has served.
Where to even start? As a chief, you would think it would be imperative to show up to work looking professional. However, he comes to work in a non-department fishing shirt, jeans, and Crocs.
He had an engineer marry him and his wife at the station, had personnel work on his kids’ school science project for him, and had them work on his personal golf cart as well. He is probably at work only three out of the five workdays. He once instigated an argument between an officer and a citizen. He regularly has home furniture delivered to the station and allowed a family member to park their RV behind the station and live there for a few days. His office and work vehicle are constantly unorganized messes. He rarely takes command of fire scenes and gives next to no direction on a day-to-day basis. He holds the department and its members to the bare minimum standards, if that.
There’s probably more I could say, but I’d have to jog my memory.
