The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) is the primary law enforcement agency serving the city of San Antonio, Texas. It is responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, preventing crime, and responding to emergencies throughout the city.
Key facts:
Chief of Police: As of recent updates, the Chief is William P. McManus.
Jurisdiction: Covers the city of San Antonio, one of the largest cities in the U.S.
Divisions: Includes patrol, investigations, special operations, traffic, and community engagement units.
Community Focus: Emphasizes community policing, transparency, and public trust.
Size: One of the larger municipal police departments in Texas, with thousands of officers and civilian staff.
San Antonio PD does a few things well and many things horribly.
They have one of the best pay and benefits packages around with a solid retirement and health plan.
However it is slowly being degraded due to poor leadership among the association.
The promotion process is entirely based on how well you test and has lead to poor leadership and a bunch of yes men/women across the department.
The chief and his crew are nothing but political puppets and will not hesitate to hammer any officer because of “optics”. However if you’re on the inside you’ll be protected. Last I check there were over 60 officers placed on indefinite suspension and are fighting in arbitration to return to duty. Over 98% of arbitration goes in favor of the officer.
The department is highly understaffed for the size and amount of crime in the city and it’s only getting worse. The department can’t hire enough to keep up with attrition and officers are leaving with only a few years on to do better things.
Do proactive police work at your own risk as anything related to bad optics will get you disciplined. Supervisors must review BWC and have to do something for any policy violations found (which is literally the size of a phone book) or they get disciplined.
There is plenty of opportunity for overtime and can make loads of money, however risky.
There are a many solid offices to work along with (my hats off too them) but unfortunately there are many more that are just there to collect a paycheck and do as little as possible or promote and become just another ****ty supervisor.
Academy Training is decent at best but goes downhill after and the yearly inservice that’s given will make you want to slit your wrists.
There was a vote of no confidence in the chief about 8 years back and he’s still around. There was also an internal survey that went around by an outside company and the glaring consensus was leadership was abysmal. It was quickly swept under the rug.
