Overview
The Porterville Fire Department, established on June 9, 1890, began as a 22-member volunteer fire brigade. Over the years, it has evolved into a full-service professional agency serving a growing population of approximately 63,000 residents. The department currently operates out of three fire stations—Stations 71, 72, and 73—and includes a central administrative office.
Today, the department is staffed by 53 full-time sworn firefighters along with a Fire Marshal, a Fire Inspector, Code Enforcement Officers, and support staff. It delivers all-risk emergency response services, including fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue operations, and hazardous materials response.
In addition to emergency response, the Porterville Fire Department maintains a strong focus on prevention and public safety education. The Fire Prevention Division handles code enforcement, building inspections, and community education programs aimed at reducing risk and improving preparedness.
Training is a central priority, with ongoing development for all personnel and community outreach that includes station tours, public demonstrations, and educational initiatives. The department is also active in seasonal safety programs, such as safe-and-sane fireworks campaigns and firework booth permitting.
The Porterville Fire Department operates under the guiding mission “To Safeguard and Put Duty Above All,” and embraces core values including Professionalism, Compassion, Leadership, Integrity, Vision, and Trust. With a foundation built on over 130 years of service, the department honors its history while continuing to adapt to the evolving needs of the community. Through a strategic blend of tradition and innovation, it remains committed to delivering high-quality public safety services to the City of Porterville.
