This department has become a revolving door—good employees leave constantly, and leadership acts surprised every time. The turnover rate is a direct result of poor management, lack of direction, and zero accountability from the top down. The chief has no backbone and consistently fails to stand up for his crews or make decisions that benefit the people actually doing the job.
Morale is in the gutter, and any concerns brought up are either brushed off or pushed aside until the next person quits. It’s a reactive, short-sighted culture that drives out the very people who could make the place better.
It’s a shame, because the potential is there. The firefighters are good guys, the facilities are impressive, and the equipment is great but unfortunately, that’s where the support ends. Leadership just needs to get out of their own way….
Sure the department can be a revolving door, but when you have a call volume of 1600 a year and you’re a new, young firefighter it can have more downtime then what you initially expected. Turnover rate can’t be a direct result of poor leadership when the people who have left have either gone onto bigger departments or had personal issues. There is a direction, show up do your job and have a good attitude; which most of the members have. Like all departments we have those members who are notoriously disgruntled with a mightier than thou complex who believe they are gods gift to the service.
As far as making decisions that back up his guys, I mean we did get 48/96 early on before more departments moved to it, we’re paid well (can always be more though – I mean times are tough in the good ol USA), tons of training opportunities, functioning equipment.
Department morale does fluctuate, but more often than not it’s a positive morale till some people try to find something wrong with the department. Now the people who have left so far, can’t really say they’ll be missed but everyone has their own opinion.
Overall great department to be a member of, has its issues like everywhere else. Sometimes you just gotta keep on keepin’ on. Lifes a garden, dig it. Make it work for you.
