80/20 rule. 80% awesome, 20% bull****. If you can look past the 20, you’ll love the 80. Normal problems with any departments, big egos higher up the chain and normal amount of disconnect between admin and the line. Very well funded and trained department. Was voted #1 fire department in Arkansas in 2025.
Working here has been a great experience overall. It’s a fun, fast-paced department with a lot of solid firefighters who take pride in their work. The team culture is strong, and there’s a sense of brotherhood/sisterhood that makes coming to work something to look forward to.
The department is well-equipped — everything from the latest tools to advanced apparatus is at your disposal. Whether you’re into EMS or fire, there’s plenty of action to go around, and the call volume keeps things interesting without burning you out. Fire duty is decent, and you won’t be starved for experience.
There are nine stations currently, with more in the works, so the department is definitely growing alongside the region. Leadership is mostly solid, with a chief who genuinely cares about the members and has done a great job supporting the crew — especially when it comes to mental health, which is a huge plus. That said, like many places, there are a few in admin who seem to think they’re God’s gift to the fire service, which can make certain things more frustrating than they need to be.
The biggest downside is the pay — it’s okay, but it doesn’t really keep up with the cost of living in Northwest Arkansas, which continues to climb.
All in all, it’s a great place to work with a lot of upside. If you’re looking for solid experience, good people, and room to grow, this is a department worth checking out.
