The Victorville Fire Department actively operates out of five Fire Stations. The Department operates a fleet of five Medic Engines, one Medic Truck, and three Medic Squads.
Awesome place to work. Located in the high desert, lots of fire, crime and really bad drivers. The men and women of this department are what make it a great place to work. Re established in 2019, still figuring some stuff out.
Some stations are a bit rundown, but are scheduled for remodels. Could use more stations and apparatus, 25,000+ calls out of five stations. Very busy.
Chiefs are chiefs, nothing great, nothing bad. City and council support the FD 100%. Good contract, replacing fleet, adding units and purchasing of gear/equipment regularly. Good relationship with council and city admin. City is statistically driven, provide the stats and they’ll never shy away from what is truly needed. Just takes a long time.
Staffing shortage in FF/PM rank, mainly due to opening a station and adding two additional medic squads in the last four years. Should be changing with recent hirings and paramedic school graduations.
Not the highest paid, not the lowest. Decent benefits. Imagine being on probation and being treated like an adult, mind blowing. Show up, do your job, have fun, go home. Young department, lots of growth and advancement, can’t wait to see what this place becomes in 10-15 years.
Overall I really love it. Lots of fire, laid back environment. Chiefs care about the guys. Some of our rigs are really nice, others are falling apart. 48/96 schedule – great when we have no vacancies. More vacancies = more forces, same as everywhere else. We need more stations now, seems like there are plans for that soon. The people are awesome, it’s fun to come to work.
