Overview
The Beverly Fire Department (BFD) is a full-time, career fire service responsible for protecting the City of Beverly, Massachusetts—a coastal community spanning 17 square miles with a population of approximately 40,000 residents. Under the leadership of Chief Peter K. O’Connor since 2020, the department operates out of three strategically located stations: Headquarters on Hale Street, Station 3 in Beverly Farms, and Station 5 in North Beverly. The department maintains a fleet of modern apparatus including engines, ladder trucks, a rescue unit, and a dive rescue vehicle, with daily operations staffed by 67 firefighters and officers.
Responding to over 6,000 emergency calls annually, BFD provides a full range of services including structural firefighting, emergency medical response, motor vehicle accident rescue, and technical water rescues. It also serves as the sponsoring agency for Massachusetts FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 1 (MA-TF1), a nationally deployable team that has responded to major disasters such as the September 11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Sandy.
In addition to emergency response, the department places a strong emphasis on fire prevention and community education. Its Fire Prevention Bureau conducts inspections, issues permits, and leads safety campaigns in schools and neighborhoods. Training and safety are prioritized internally, with a designated Training and Safety Officer overseeing continuous professional development and decontamination protocols. The Beverly Fire Department operates with a mission to deliver high-quality fire protection and rescue services with professionalism, competence, and a strong commitment to public safety and education.
